Stress and Children

In this busy world we live in you know how often you become stressed - out
of control and just plain angry. Imagine those feelings if you were a
child and didn't know how to handle it.  The world today is so much more
demanding on our children than it was 20 - 30 years ago. Everything is
moving at such a faster pace these days. This causes our little people to
become stressed the same way we do.  Children's feelings are important. It
is O.K. for them to get angry. It is also very important for them to know
how to handle that anger. Here are a few things that might help you help
your child when they are stressed about a situation.

Tell your child it is best to settle conflicts with words rather than
fighting. Talking will help. Have them take a time out, relax and breathe.
If they are really angry let them punch a pillow or something soft that
won't hurt them to help vent their anger.

Another suggestion is to try a compromise. Have the children make an
agreement about how to solve the problem. If the children can't come up
with a compromise themselves have them go to an adult for help. If a
compromise can't be reached with adult help, it is  O.K. to agree to
disagree.
 
Children should learn to deal with their stress and anger in a positive
way. Never allow name calling or hitting when they are angry. This will
only cause more stress between the children.
 
So when your little ones are sad or upset, remember how you feel as an
adult when you are angry. Give them the space the need to work it out.
With a little love, guidance and understanding you'll be surprised at what
they can do.
